Wayne State School of Medicine was founded in 1868 as Detroit College of Medicine, located in Woodward Avenue. Presently, theWayne State University Medical School is one of the best Medical Schools inMichigan.

At the same time, the Michigan College of Medicine started in 1879, with its classes at Hotel Hesse. In 1885, there was a merger between these two to form the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery.

In 1913, the Detroit Board of Education joined the medical college with colleges of other streams. This new institution having colleges of medicine, education, engineering, and liberal arts were known as the Colleges of the City of Detroit. In 1956, it became Wayne State University.
